Since 2022, our school tour programme has been growing steadily. In 2023, we welcomed 30 school tours to the mill from both primary schools and secondary schools. Our tours are a unique and enjoyable experience for students and teachers, incorporating interactive elements and lots of learning. Whether it’s a group of 6 or 16 year olds, we can customise our tour to suit your students’ needs, your class size and your schedule.
School Tour Structure
While we can completely customise the running order for the day, this is the stucture for a typical school tour:
- Short introduction to the mill and the process of milling
- Students are broken into groups for a bread-baking class
- Tea, coffee, juice and bread-tasting while the bread bakes
- Longer talk on the history of milling, how waterpower is harnessed, how millstones work and how a mill operates
- Tour of the mill and milling demonstration
Students can take their loaf of bread home with them and we also give some 2kg bags of our stoneground wholemeal flour as a prize for the best loaf and best question.

FAQ
Is there a maximum group size?
We have a max group size of 72 students per session. If you have more than 72 students, we have plenty of fantastic historic sights nearby for one half of your group to visit while the other half is in the mill – we would be more than happy to advise! We only have one school tour per day so your group can take their lunch with them and enjoy it in the surroundings of the mill, either before or after the tour.
How long does the tour last?
The tour can last from 1hr 45mins to 2hr 30mins, depending on your schedule.
Is there parking available at the mill?
Yes, we have just completed a new car park at the mill so there is plenty of space for coach buses to manoeuvre.
